Cake
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup butter (2 cubes)
  • 1 cup water
  • 5 tablespoons cocoa powder
Icing
  • 1/2 cup butter (1 cube)
  • 6 tablespoons milk
  • 5 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped (*optional)
Instructions
Cake
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Grease a 10 x 15 cookie sheet.  Make sure to use a cookie sheet with sides.  This cake batter will fill the cookie sheet.

  3. In your mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt and baking soda.  Give them a little mix, breaking up any clumps.  Add in sour cream and eggs, beat until smooth.  Set aside.

  4. On your stove top, set to low, melt 1 cup butter,  It is best to slice your butter into several pieces, so they melt faster and more evenly.  Once butter is melted, add 1 cup of water and 5 tablespoons of cocoa powder.  Stir continuously and let the mixture come to a boil.

  5. Remove from stove top and let cool for 10 minutes.  After 10 minutes, add chocolate mixture to the other ingredients in your mixing bowl.  Mix all ingredients until well combined.

  6. Pour cake batter into greased cookie sheet.  Give it a little shake to make it even and smooth.  Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes.  To make sure it is done, insert a toothpick in the center of the cake, if it comes out clean, it's done.

Icing
  1. On your stove top, in a large sauce pan, melt 1/2 cup of butter, then add milk and 5 tablespoons of cocoa powder.  Stir constantly.  Bring to a boil and remove from heat.  Add vanilla.  Stir in powdered sugar a cup at a time until it is all incorporated and your icing is smooth.  Fold in nuts (optional).

  2. Pour warm icing over warm cake and let cool.
